Nine Ways to Give to Ole Miss Students on Giving Tuesday

On Giving Tuesday, a worldwide annual day of giving set for Nov. 28, University of Mississippi alumni and friends have opportunities to support student-led projects, scholarships and research opportunities.

These crowdfunding campaigns, hosted on the university’s Ignite Ole Miss page, offer everyone a chance to get involved in philanthropy by making a gift of any size — even to multiple projects. Giving Tuesday gifts can help fund clothing donation bins, summer research programs for undergraduates, training activities for ROTC cadets, scholarships and more.

“Together, we can make a difference in the lives of students and beyond through these worthwhile initiatives with our support of Ole Miss,” said Maura Langhart, senior director of annual giving.

A global initiative on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday counters the consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday and redirects people’s focus to acts of kindness and charitable giving. For each gift of $18.48 or more, donors will receive a pair of “Gosh Almighty”-themed Ole Miss.

Here’s how your support will help Ole Miss students:

  • Re-Rebs Clothing Recycling Initiative: Re-Rebs, which began in a Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College course, needs resources to provide collection bins in all Ole Miss residence halls, giving students easy access to donate clothing to local charities.
  • Army ROTC Egg Bowl Run: The Egg Bowl Run campaign raises money for UM Army ROTC cadets to participate in training exercises, team-building opportunities and competitions, preparing future officers to excel in the Army and in life.
  • Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College’s Koi Society: Enrich the education of all Honors College students by supporting the experiential learning moments that set the SMBHC apart from the typical campus experience.
  • School of Pharmacy Summer Research Program: Give to ensure more UM students can participate in a nine-week Summer Research Experience that prepares them for future careers in biomedicine.
  • School of Education Teacher and Counselor Education Essentials Kits: Help provide classroom essentials for School of Education students as they begin their careers as young teachers and counselors.
  • Ole Miss Fund: Giving to the Ole Miss Fund makes an impact on every corner of campus life by addressing the university’s most pressing needs. UM uses these donations to fund scholarships, technology and facility upgrades, research and more.
  • Ole Miss Opportunity Scholarship: Designed specifically for Mississippi residents who could not otherwise afford to attend college, this scholarship gives students a chance to pursue their dreams at Ole Miss. Gifts to the scholarship fund ensure this resource will always be available for students in need.
  • Oscar Pope Memorial Scholarship: Honor the life and legacy of the late Oscar R. Pope through this scholarship for School of Journalism and New Media students. A young UM graduate, Pope joined Turner Broadcasting as marketing coordinator for the National Basketball Association on TNT and NBA TV.
  • Carnesha Nelson Memorial Scholarship: Carnesha Nelson’s life was tragically cut short in 2004 after her sophomore year at the university. This scholarship was started by her friends and family and benefits students in the School of Applied Sciences. They invite everyone to contribute to help preserve her memory.
